After vault mishap, Algeria’s Kaylia Nemour vows to approach upcoming finals ‘with even more motivation’

A mishap during the vault in her first rotation ultimately cost Kaylia Nemour of Algeria a chance at a medal in the all-around final at the World Championships in Rotterdam on Friday. Despite this setback, she is committed to refocusing her efforts for the upcoming apparatus finals this weekend.

Reflecting on her performance, the 19-year-old Nemour expressed her feelings about finishing fourth, which mirrored her result in the 2025 World Championships. “My initial feeling? I’m disappointed,” she stated. “That’s all there is to it. I fought until the very end and never gave up, but the disappointment remains nonetheless.”

Nemour explained that a problematic take-off compromised her intended vault, a double-twisting Yurchenko, resulting in a simpler layout. “My feet were too deep into the ‘U’ (the safety zone mat around the springboard), which meant I didn’t get the push I needed to launch myself into the air,” she noted. “What happened afterward just sort of happened on its own. It wasn’t something I intended.”

As the 2024 Olympic champion on the uneven bars, Nemour is determined to move past Friday’s disappointments. She aims to defend her 2025 world title on the uneven bars and either match or exceed her 2025 world silver on the balance beam in the finals ahead. “It’s still too early for me to feel satisfied with the rest of my performance,” she remarked. “Now, I’m going to try to refocus so I can approach the upcoming finals, with even more motivation.”
