Norway’s Sebastian Sponevik on historic world bronze: ‘It feels almost surreal’

Norwegian athlete Sebastian Sponevik achieved a remarkable feat by securing a bronze medal at the World Championships held in Rotterdam on Saturday. He expressed his disbelief at this historic accomplishment, marking the first medal ever won by Norway at the World Championships.

“I was coming into this final with the only expectation to have fun and do as well as I can perform, so to come away with a medal, I still can’t believe it. It feel really amazing.” stated the 21-year-old Sponevik. He entered the final with the goal of enjoying the experience and performing to the best of his abilities. “I’ll probably spend some time with my family and friends,” he added.

Sponevik, who is coached by 14-time World competitor Espen Jansen, has been working towards this landmark achievement. He finished 14th on vault during the qualifications at the 2023 Worlds in Antwerp and placed 10th in the vault qualifications at the 2025 Worlds in Jakarta, where he also ranked 18th in the all-around final.

Upon returning to Norway, Sponevik plans to celebrate this significant milestone with his family and friends. “I’ll probably spend some time with my family and friends,” he mentioned.
