Mélanie de Jesus dos Santos and her 2019 European all-around title

On 12 April 2019 Mélanie de Jesus dos Santos became European all-around champion in Szczecin. Seven years on, the result reads as a turning point for French women's gymnastics and as one of the clearest examples of how an all-around final is won: not by the single best routine, but by four routines without a serious error.

The final in brief

The women's all-around final at Netto Arena was a typical late-cycle contest. Difficulty was high across the field, and the margins between the leading gymnasts were small enough that one fall would decide the podium. Several contenders made mistakes on beam and bars, the two apparatus where all-around finals most often turn. De Jesus dos Santos did not.

Her floor routine was the signature of her gymnastics: strong tumbling, but also choreography that looked designed rather than assembled. In a code where artistry sometimes gets squeezed by difficulty, her floor work stood out for its personality.

From Martinique to the top of Europe

De Jesus dos Santos was born in Martinique and moved to mainland France to train. Her path reflects a familiar story in French sport, where talent from the overseas regions has contributed hugely to national teams. Her European title was the first all-around crown for a French woman at a European Championships in many years, and it gave the national programme a leader for the Tokyo cycle.

Why the result held up

Early-season titles sometimes fade. This one did not, because it was built on consistency rather than an unusual set of mistakes by rivals. De Jesus dos Santos went on to compete in the all-around final at the Tokyo Olympics and remained a central figure in French gymnastics into the next cycle.

What it shows about all-around gymnastics

- The all-around rewards the gymnast with the fewest big deductions, not the most spectacular single routine. - Bars and beam are where finals are lost; floor and vault are where they are often won. - Composure under rotation pressure is a skill in its own right.

Revisiting the footage

If you go back to the Szczecin final, watch how the standings shift rotation by rotation. It is a good lesson in how difficult all-around gymnastics is to predict, and why a clean beam routine can be worth more than a new skill.
