2020 European Trampoline, Tumbling and DMT Championships – Gothenburg plans

Gothenburg was set to host the European Championships in trampoline gymnastics, tumbling and double mini-trampoline (DMT) in May 2020. Ticket sales had opened in December 2019, and the event was expected to be one of the best-attended trampoline championships in years.

Three disciplines under one roof

- Trampoline: individual and synchronised routines of ten skills on a large trampoline, judged on difficulty, execution, time of flight and horizontal displacement. - Tumbling: passes of eight elements along a sprung track, built for speed and rotation. - Double mini-trampoline: a run-up, a skill on the small trampoline bed and a dismount skill onto a landing mat.

All three are covered in our explainer on trampoline, tumbling and DMT.

The pandemic and its consequences

The championships could not take place in May 2020 and were moved into 2021. For trampoline gymnasts, who were in the middle of Olympic qualification for Tokyo, the delay added uncertainty to an already tight process. Training on trampolines also requires specialist facilities and safety supervision, so lockdowns hit the discipline particularly hard.
