The 29th European Women’s Artistic Gymnastics Championships were held in Brussels, Belgium, from 9 to 13 May 2012, with senior and junior competitions. In an Olympic year the senior programme centred on the team event and apparatus finals.
Romania’s championship
Romania won the senior team title with Larisa Iordache, Cătălina Ponor, Diana Bulimar, Sandra Izbașa and Raluca Haidu. Romanian gymnasts then won three of the four apparatus finals: Izbașa on vault, Ponor on beam and Iordache on floor. Izbașa went on to win the Olympic vault title in London that summer.
Komova on bars
Viktoria Komova of Russia won the uneven bars final, the event where Russia was strongest in that cycle.
Juniors
Russia won the junior team title. The junior all-around went to Enus Mariani of Italy.
Brussels in the Olympic cycle
For Romania, Brussels was the high point of the build-up to London, where the team won Olympic bronze. For Russia, it was a reminder that bars could deliver gold even when the team result did not.
