Nanjing 2014: Tutkhalyan and Nagornyy lead the Youth Olympic artistic events

The second summer Youth Olympic Games were held in Nanjing, China, in August 2014. In artistic gymnastics, Russia’s Seda Tutkhalyan and Nikita Nagornyy were the most successful gymnasts of the competition.

The medal picture

After the apparatus finals Russia had won three gold, one silver and one bronze medal in men’s artistic gymnastics, two gold and one silver in women’s artistic gymnastics, and a bronze in trampoline. Great Britain won three gold and two bronze medals in men’s artistic and one silver and three bronze in women’s artistic.

Men’s finals

Giarnni Regini-Moran of Great Britain won the floor final, his second gold after the all-around. His difficulty score of 5.800 kept him ahead of Japan’s Kenya Yuasa, whose execution was higher but whose difficulty was a full point lower. Nikita Nagornyy, the only gymnast to qualify for all six apparatus finals, won pommel horse by three hundredths ahead of Ukraine’s Vladyslav Hryko.

Why Nanjing matters in hindsight

– Nagornyy went on to become world all-around champion in 2019 and an Olympic team champion in Tokyo. – Tutkhalyan competed for Russia at the Rio Olympics two years later and won team silver. – Regini-Moran became a senior international for Great Britain.

The rhythmic competition at the same Games is covered in Nanjing 2014: gold for Irina Annenkova.
