Glasgow 2018: how the multi-sport European Championships came together

In April 2016, during the SportAccord Convention in Lausanne, a delegation from Glasgow City Council and European Championships Management (ECM) visited the headquarters of the European Union of Gymnastics (UEG) to discuss the 2018 artistic gymnastics Europeans.

The idea

The 2018 men’s and women’s artistic Europeans were to be part of the first European Championships, a new multi-sport event that would stage seven European Championships in seven sports at the same time, every four years. Glasgow, with Berlin, was chosen as the first host.

The parties

The Glasgow delegation included the city’s director of sport and its championships director, together with a senior manager from ECM. They met the UEG’s general director to finalise the terms of cooperation.

How it turned out

The 2018 European Championships took place in August 2018, with gymnastics in Glasgow. The format was repeated in Munich in 2022. For gymnastics it meant a bigger audience and a shared broadcast package, at the cost of moving the artistic Europeans to late summer.
