The Averina twins dominate the 2017 World Games in Wrocław

Rhythmic gymnastics was part of the 2017 World Games in Wrocław, Poland. Twenty-three gymnasts competed at the Centennial Hall for eight places in each apparatus final.

Day one

Arina Averina won hoop and ball with two near-perfect routines, with her twin sister Dina second on both. Israel’s Linoy Ashram matched the twins’ difficulty with hoop and took bronze, and Belarus’s Katsiaryna Halkina won bronze with ball.

Day two

Arina added a third gold with ribbon. A dropped club prevented a clean sweep, but she still took clubs bronze. The routine of the event was Dina’s clubs exercise: maximum difficulty of 10.0 and an execution score of 9.1. Ashram won clubs silver, and Halkina won a second bronze, with ribbon.

In context

The twins had shared the European titles in Budapest two months earlier, and their rivalry defined the post-Rio years. The World Championships in Pesaro followed at the end of August.
