The first individual European Artistic Gymnastics Championships were held in Debrecen, Hungary, from 2 to 5 June 2005. The new format brought men and women together at one event without a team competition, focused entirely on the all-around and apparatus finals.
All-around champions
Rafael Martínez of Spain won the men’s all-around and Marine Debauve of France the women’s. Both titles were historic for their nations.
Apparatus finals
– Men’s floor: Marian Drăgulescu (Romania) – Pommel horse: Krisztián Berki (Hungary), in front of a home crowd – Rings: Andrea Coppolino (Italy) and Yuri van Gelder (Netherlands), tied – Men’s vault: Evgeni Sapronenko (Latvia) – Parallel bars: Manuel Carballo (Spain) – Horizontal bar: Fabian Hambüchen (Germany) – Women’s vault: Francesca Benolli (Italy) – Uneven bars: Émilie Le Pennec (France) – Balance beam: Cătălina Ponor (Romania) – Women’s floor: Isabelle Severino (France)
Why the individual format mattered
Debrecen introduced the individual European Championships. The format returned in later cycles, including Moscow 2013, Cluj-Napoca 2017 and Szczecin 2019.
