The 25th European Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships were held at the Heydar Aliyev Sports and Concert Complex in Baku, Azerbaijan, from 15 to 17 May 2009. It was the first Europeans after the Beijing Olympics.
Four finals, one winner
The senior programme combined a team event with four apparatus finals: rope, hoop, ball and ribbon. Evgenia Kanaeva of Russia, the reigning Olympic champion, won all four. Russia also won the team title.
Winning every apparatus final at a continental championship is a rare result. It requires four routines with no significant error across a single weekend, against specialists who may have trained one apparatus harder than the others.
Juniors
The junior groups competed with 5 ribbons, and Russia won the title.
Baku and rhythmic gymnastics
Baku became one of the regular hosts of European gymnastics in the following decade. The city staged the 2014 rhythmic Europeans, the gymnastics events of the first European Games in 2015, the 2018 trampoline Europeans and the 2019 rhythmic and aerobic Europeans.
